The nearest village for day-to-day basics, with shops, pubs and local services is Kilkhampton which is a short drive away. It is a handy stop for groceries, food or a quick meal out without needing to head into Bude. Bude itself gives you more choice, with supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, surf schools, family facilities and several beaches around the town.

Across the Devon border, Hartland offers a more remote village setting with access to Hartland Quay and some of the wildest coastline in the area. Stratton, just outside Bude, is another nearby village worth knowing for pubs and local history. Morwenstow also works well with trips to Clovelly, Crackington Haven and Widemouth Bay if you want a wider mix of coast and countryside during your stay.

Nearby beaches

Morwenstow is close to the coast, but not set beside a simple village beach. The nearest shoreline is rugged, with cliffs, coves and steep access rather than easy sand and facilities. This is important if you are booking with young children or anyone who needs straightforward beach access.

Duckpool is one of the closest beaches, reached through a quiet valley north of Bude. It is good for walks, scenery and a more natural beach stop, but it is not a facilities-led family beach. Sandymouth Bay is a more practical option, with sand at low tide, cliffs, rock pools and parking nearby. For a busier beach day with shops, toilets and food close to hand, Summerleaze and Crooklets in Bude are the easiest choices.

Interesting things to see and do

Hawker’s Hut is the best-known local landmark, perched on the cliffs above the sea. It was used by Reverend Robert Stephen Hawker, Morwenstow’s famous vicar, poet and eccentric local figure. The nearby church of St Morwenna and St John the Baptist is also worth visiting, especially if you are interested in the area’s history and its links to shipwrecks along this dangerous coast.

The South West Coast Path is the main outdoor draw, with routes towards Marsland Mouth, Duckpool and Bude. This is proper walking country, with steep sections, exposed cliffs and big coastal views, so sensible footwear and weather checks matter. For easier days out, Bude offers the sea pool, canal, shops and surf schools, while Hartland, Clovelly and Widemouth Bay give you different options along the north Devon and north Cornwall coast.
