Beaches around Bude

Summerleaze Beach is the easiest beach to reach from the town centre and sits beside the harbour entrance and Bude Canal. It has a broad sandy area at low tide, backed by cliffs and beach huts, with the sea pool set into the rocks on one side. Crooklets Beach is just north of Summerleaze and has a more open feel, with rock pools, surf conditions and direct access to the coast path.

Widemouth Bay, a few miles south of Bude, is larger and more exposed. It is one of the main surfing beaches in the area and works well for longer walks when the tide is out. The beach is more spread out than the town beaches, with cliffs and open views giving it a stronger north coast feel.

Coastal paths and walking routes

The South West Coast Path runs through Bude and gives direct access to cliff-top walking routes in both directions. North of the town, the path leads towards quieter sections of coast near Duckpool and Sandymouth, where the cliffs and rock formations feel more remote. South of Bude, the route towards Widemouth Bay gives open views back towards the town and across the Atlantic.

This is not a soft, sheltered stretch of Cornwall. The coastline is more rugged, with tides, wind and surf playing a big part in how the beaches feel from one day to the next.

Things to see in Bude

Bude Canal gives the town a different feature from many Cornish beach destinations, running inland from the sea and adding a calmer walking route away from the cliffs. The harbour area, sea lock and canal paths sit close to Summerleaze, so they are easy to include without leaving town. The Castle Bude, now a heritage centre, also sits near the canal and beach, giving some local context to the town’s history.

Bude’s appeal is the mix of useful town facilities and immediate access to a wilder stretch of coast. You can stay close to shops, cafes and beaches while still being only a short distance from quieter cliff paths and less developed shoreline.
