The closest coastal base is West Bay and the place most visitors head for beach time, harbour walks and views of the cliffs. It has a more traditional seaside feel than Bridport, with fish and chips, boat activity, beach access and a compact harbour area. The two places work well together, with Bridport offering the town facilities and West Bay giving you the coast.

Burton Bradstock is close by and has a quieter village feel, with access to Hive Beach and the coast towards Cogden. Eype sits just west of West Bay and is useful for a more tucked-away beach stop and walking routes. Further along the coast, Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown and Abbotsbury all offer different day trips, from fossil beaches to hill walks, gardens and village seafronts.

West Bay has two main beach areas, one on either side of the harbour. East Beach is backed by high golden cliffs and is one of the most recognisable stretches of coast in this part of Dorset. West Beach has a different feel, with shingle, harbour views and easier access from the village centre.

Hive Beach at Burton Bradstock is another popular nearby option, with a broad shingle beach and views along the Jurassic Coast. Eype Beach is quieter and more open, with fewer facilities and a more natural feel. Seatown and Charmouth are also within reach if you want fossil hunting, cliff walks or a change from the West Bay area.

Points of interest and things to do

Bridport is known for its markets, independent shops, food scene and arts venues, which gives the town more going on than a simple beach base. The regular street markets are a useful part of the stay, especially if you like browsing local produce, antiques, books and small stalls. The town also has pubs, cafés, restaurants and galleries within a compact centre.

The Jurassic Coast is the main outdoor draw, with walking routes from West Bay towards Eype, Burton Bradstock and beyond. The cliffs around West Bay are impressive, but cliff edges and beaches below them need care because of erosion and rockfall. For longer days out, Lyme Regis, Abbotsbury, Golden Cap and the Marshwood Vale give you a good mix of coast, countryside, fossils, views and local food.
