Lyme Regis is the closest town to Charmouth and is the most useful nearby base for extra restaurants, shops, harbour walks and a livelier seafront. It works well for a day out when you want more choice than the village offers, while still staying somewhere quieter overnight. Axminster sits inland and is useful for rail links, supermarkets and practical services.

To the east, Bridport and West Bay give you a different part of the Dorset coast, with a harbour, markets, places to eat and access to more Jurassic Coast scenery. Seatown and Chideock are smaller nearby options, useful for walks, pubs and access towards Golden Cap. Charmouth’s position makes it easy to move between west Dorset and east Devon without committing to a busier town base.

The South West Coast Path connects Charmouth with Lyme Regis, Seatown and the wider west Dorset coast, although some sections can be steep, muddy or affected by erosion. For days away from the beach, Lyme Regis, Bridport, West Bay and the Marshwood Vale all give you simple options without the need to travel too far.
