Lyme Regis is a useful base if you want to explore both west Dorset and east Devon. Charmouth is the closest coastal village and is especially popular for fossil hunting, beach walks and access to the cliffs. Axminster sits inland and is useful for rail links, shops and services, while Seaton and Beer are nearby East Devon options with a quieter coastal feel.

Further along the Dorset coast, Bridport and West Bay offer a different kind of day out, with harbour areas, beaches, markets and access to more Jurassic Coast scenery. Burton Bradstock and Abbotsbury are also within reach if you want smaller villages and quieter coastal stops. Lyme Regis itself is the livelier base, with more places to eat, shop and spend time by the water.

The main town beach is the easiest for families, with sand and shingle, nearby facilities and a sheltered position close to the seafront. It is the most practical choice if you want to move between the beach, cafés, shops and your cottage during the day.

Monmouth Beach sits west of the Cobb and has a more rugged feel, with pebbles, rock ledges and fossil interest along the shore. East Cliff Beach and the area towards Charmouth are also closely linked with fossil hunting, although cliff safety and tide times matter here. Charmouth Beach is another popular choice nearby, especially for visitors who want a wider fossil beach with visitor facilities close at hand.

The Cobb is Lyme Regis’ best-known landmark and one of the main reasons people visit the town. It protects the harbour, gives clear views back towards the seafront and is closely tied to the town’s maritime history. The harbour area is also good for short walks, boat trips, fishing trips and simple time by the water.

Fossil hunting is a major part of the Lyme Regis area, with the coastline forming part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The local museums and guided walks are useful if you want to understand what you are looking for rather than simply searching the beach. Lyme Regis also has gardens, independent shops, galleries, places to eat and coastal walks towards Charmouth or the Undercliff, making it a good choice for a cottage stay with plenty to do beyond the beach.
