Nearby towns and villages

Porthleven is one of the best nearby places for food, harbour walks and a change of scene. It has more going on than Praa Sands, with restaurants, pubs, cafés and a working harbour at the centre of the town. It is a good option for an evening meal or a slower day away from the beach.

Further west along Mount’s Bay is Marazion which is known for St Michael’s Mount, beach walks and views across the water. Penzance gives you larger shops, transport links, the promenade and more practical services. Helston is inland and handy for supermarkets, local facilities and trips towards the Lizard Peninsula.

Nearby beaches

Praa Sands Beach is the main reason to stay here. It is a long sandy beach with surf, rock pools at lower tide and enough space for families, walkers and bodyboarders. Conditions can change, so tide times, surf and lifeguard information are worth checking before swimming.

Perranuthnoe is nearby and offers a smaller village beach with a quieter feel. Marazion Beach gives you a broader Mount’s Bay setting with views of St Michael’s Mount, while Porthleven Beach has a more open, rugged feel beside the harbour town. Further east, Gunwalloe and Church Cove give you a different side of the south Cornwall coast, with smaller beaches and access towards the Lizard.

Points of interest and things to do

The South West Coast Path runs through Praa Sands, with routes towards Porthleven in one direction and Prussia Cove, Perranuthnoe and Marazion in the other. The walks give you a mix of beach, cliffs, coves and open views across Mount’s Bay. Some sections are uneven, so it is worth treating them as proper coastal walks rather than short strolls.

Prussia Cove is one of the most interesting nearby coastal spots, known for its small coves, smuggling history and quieter shoreline. St Michael’s Mount is also within easy reach from Marazion, while Porthleven adds harbour food, local shops and coastal walks around Loe Bar. Praa Sands is a good base for beach-heavy holidays with enough nearby towns, coves and landmarks to keep the week varied.
