Newlyn is just along the coast from Penzance and gives you a working harbour setting, seafood, galleries and a more local feel. It is an easy place to visit for food, harbour walks and a different view of Mount’s Bay. Continue further along the coast and you reach Mousehole, a smaller harbour village with narrow streets, pubs, galleries and a more tucked-away feel.

Marazion lies in the other direction and is one of the most popular nearby stops, mainly because of St Michael’s Mount and the beach beside Mount’s Bay. Long Rock sits between Penzance and Marazion and is handy for beach access, walking and a flatter stretch of coast. Further west, places such as Lamorna, Porthcurno and St Just give you very different days out, from coves and theatre trips to mining history and open coastal scenery.

Nearby beaches

Penzance itself has a seafront rather than one main resort beach. The promenade is good for walking, sea views and access to the open-air Jubilee Pool, but most visitors head slightly along the bay for easier beach days. Long Rock Beach is one of the nearest options, with a long, flat shoreline and views across to St Michael’s Mount.

Marazion Beach is close by and gives you a wider sandy stretch with the Mount just offshore. Perranuthnoe is a smaller village beach further east, while Praa Sands Beach offers a broader beach with more of an open-coast feel. In the other direction, Mousehole has a small harbour beach at low tide, and Porthcurno Beach is worth the trip if you want pale sand, clear water and a more dramatic setting.

Points of interest and things to do

The promenade and Jubilee Pool are two of the easiest places to start in Penzance. The pool gives the town a distinctive seafront feature, while the promenade links naturally with walks towards Newlyn and Mousehole. The harbour, Chapel Street, Morrab Gardens and local galleries add more to the town than just its position on the bay.

Penzance is also well placed for day trips around west Cornwall. St Michael’s Mount is close by at Marazion, while the Minack Theatre and Porthcurno make a good combined outing further west. Land’s End, St Ives, Mousehole, Newlyn, Lamorna and the mining coast around St Just are all within reach, making Penzance a sensible base if you want coast, history, gardens, food and transport links in one place.
