Nearby towns and villages

The nearest larger town for supermarkets, rail links, restaurants, shops and practical services is Penzance. It also gives you access to the promenade, Jubilee Pool, harbour area and routes around Mount’s Bay. For a smaller coastal stop, Mousehole is close enough for a meal, harbour walk or slower evening by the water.

Treen is just inland from Porthcurno and is worth knowing if you are looking at cottages slightly away from the beach. Porthgwarra lies further around the coast and has a tucked-away cove feel, while Sennen gives you a broader beach setting closer to Land’s End. St Just is also nearby, with local shops, pubs, galleries and access to the mining coast.

Nearby beaches

Porthcurno Beach is the main beach, with pale sand, clear water and cliffs rising around the bay. It is one of the most eye-catching beaches in Cornwall, but access involves a walk down from the car park and conditions can change quickly. It is best enjoyed with tide times, sea conditions and the walk back up in mind.

Pedn Vounder sits nearby and is often photographed for its clear water and wide sand at low tide, but access is difficult and not suitable for everyone. Porthgwarra is a smaller cove with a more sheltered feel, while Sennen Beach offers a larger sandy beach with surf, facilities and easier access. For a quieter shoreline visit, Lamorna and Penberth give you smaller coves and fishing-village settings nearby.

Points of interest and things to do

The Minack Theatre is the best-known landmark above Porthcurno, carved into the cliff with views across the sea. Even if you are not seeing a performance, it is one of the area’s main places to visit. The beach below and the theatre above make Porthcurno feel very different from Cornwall’s larger resort beaches.

Porthcurno also has an important communications history, with the museum telling the story of undersea telegraph cables and the village’s role in global communications. The South West Coast Path gives you walking routes towards Porthgwarra, Land’s End, Treen and Penberth, with steep sections and exposed cliff paths. For fuller days out, Sennen Cove, Land’s End, Mousehole, St Just, Penzance and the mining coast around Botallack are all within reach.
