Bideford is the nearest larger town for supermarkets, shops, restaurants and practical services. It also gives you access to the wider Taw-Torridge area, including Appledore, Instow and Westward Ho!, which are useful if you want a more traditional seaside day.

Clovelly is one of the best-known nearby villages, with steep cobbled streets leading down to a small harbour. It is very different from Hartland, and works well as a half-day trip rather than somewhere to rush through. To the west, Bude gives you a livelier coastal town with beaches, surf schools, cafés and family facilities, while Kilkhampton and Bradworthy are useful smaller stops for local services.

Hartland’s coastline is more about coves and cliffs than wide sandy beaches. Hartland Quay is the closest coastal point and is good for views, walking and seeing the rock formations, but it is not a simple family beach in the usual sense. The sea can be rough here, and the shore is rocky, so it is better for exploring from land than casual swimming.

Speke’s Mill Mouth is nearby and known for its waterfall and dramatic coastal setting. Access involves walking, so it suits visitors who are comfortable with uneven paths rather than those carrying a lot of beach gear. Welcombe Mouth and Blackpool Mill offer more remote shoreline options, while Sandymouth and Summerleaze near Bude are better choices if you want broader beach space and more facilities.

Points of interest and things to do

The South West Coast Path is one of the main reasons to stay around Hartland. This section of coast is steep, exposed and rewarding, with routes around Hartland Quay, Speke’s Mill Mouth and the wider Hartland Peninsula. It is proper walking country, so good footwear and realistic route planning matter.

Hartland Abbey is close to the village and makes a useful change from the coast, with gardens, woodland walks and access towards Blackpool Mill. The Hartland Point lighthouse area is another local highlight, with wide sea views and a more remote feel than many parts of Devon. For longer days out, Clovelly, Bideford, Westward Ho!, Bude and the North Devon coast give you a good mix of harbour villages, sandy beaches and practical town facilities.
