Clovelly is the closest place most visitors will want to explore. The village is known for its steep cobbled main street, white cottages, harbour and unusual traffic-free layout. It is a distinctive day out, but staying in Higher Clovelly gives you a quieter base away from the main flow of visitors.

Bideford is useful for supermarkets, shops, restaurants and practical services during a longer stay. Westward Ho! gives you the nearest traditional seaside option, with a long beach, seafront facilities and access to Northam Burrows. Hartland is also within reach and has a more remote village feel, with access to Hartland Quay, cliff walks and rugged coastline.

Bucks Mills is one of the nearest coastal spots, with a small pebble and rocky beach reached through a wooded valley. It is better for a quiet walk, rock pools and views than a full family beach day with lots of facilities. Clovelly has a small harbour beach, but the village is more about the harbour setting than spending a whole day on the sand.

For a broader beach day, Westward Ho Beach is the most practical nearby choice. It has a long stretch of sand, rock pools, surf and more facilities close to the seafront. Peppercombe and Mouthmill offer quieter shoreline options, but both need more planning around access, tides and walking routes.

Clovelly is the main point of interest nearby, with its harbour, visitor centre, craft workshops, shops and views over Bideford Bay. The village has a very specific layout, so comfortable footwear is useful for the walk down and back up. It is the kind of place best explored slowly rather than treated as a quick roadside stop.

The South West Coast Path passes through this part of North Devon, with routes towards Bucks Mills, Peppercombe, Clovelly and Hartland. Hartland Abbey, Hartland Quay and the cliffs around Hartland Point make good longer outings if you want a wilder section of coast. Bideford, Appledore, Westward Ho! and Instow add easier days out with shops, estuary views, beach time and places to eat.
