Across the water, Appledore is the closest coastal village and makes an easy trip when the seasonal ferry is running. It has narrow streets, a quayside, pubs, galleries and a working harbour feel, giving you a different setting without travelling far. The two villages work well together, with Instow offering the beach and estuary views, and Appledore adding harbour character.

Bideford is a short distance away and is useful for shops, supermarkets, restaurants and practical services during a longer stay. Barnstaple gives you a larger town option, with more shopping, transport links and access to the Tarka Trail. Westward Ho! is nearby too, and is the place to head if you want a wider beach, surf and a more traditional seaside feel.

Instow Beach is the main beach in the village, set along the estuary rather than the open sea. It is sandy, easy to reach and good for walks, views and relaxed time by the water. Because it is an estuary beach, swimming conditions and water quality can vary, so it is best to check local advice before going in.

Westward Ho! Beach is the nearest option for a larger open-coast beach. It has a long stretch of sand, rock pools, surf and the Pebble Ridge behind it, making it better suited to full beach days and water-sports. Saunton Sands and Croyde are further along the North Devon coast if you want bigger surf beaches, wider sands and a different kind of day out.

Points of interest and things to do

The Tarka Trail passes close to Instow, making the village a useful base for cycling and easy walking. The route links Instow with Bideford, Barnstaple and other parts of North Devon, with flat sections that are well suited to families and casual cyclists. It is a good option for days when you want to explore without driving.

The seasonal ferry to Appledore is one of Instow’s simplest pleasures, especially if you want lunch, a harbour walk or a change of view across the estuary. The village is also close to Northam Burrows, the Royal North Devon Golf Club and the wider Taw-Torridge area. Instow is best for visitors who want a quiet estuary base, good local food, gentle walks and easy trips to nearby beaches and towns.
