Looe is the main nearby town and the most useful place for extra shops, restaurants, harbour walks and boat trips. It has a busier seaside feel than Downderry, with a working harbour, town beaches and more choice for eating out. It is close enough for a day out, while Downderry gives you a quieter base to return to.

Seaton is the nearest coastal village and links closely with Downderry, especially at low tide when beach walks between the two may be possible. Portwrinkle sits further east and offers a smaller coastal setting with beaches, cliff walks and views across Whitsand Bay. Inland, Saltash and Torpoint are useful for wider services and routes towards Plymouth and the Rame Peninsula.

Downderry Beach is the village beach, with sand, shingle and rock pools exposed at lower tide. It is a good option for beach walks, paddling, fishing and quieter time by the sea, with the village close enough for food and facilities. Tide times matter here, especially if walking along the beach towards Seaton or exploring below the cliffs.

Seaton Beach is close by and offers another easy beach option, with a river, parking and places to eat nearby. Whitsand Bay is further east and gives you a longer, more open stretch of coast, although access can vary depending on where you go. Looe’s beaches are useful if you want a town beach with more facilities and a busier atmosphere.

Points of interest and things to do

The South West Coast Path runs through Downderry, giving you walking routes towards Seaton, Looe, Portwrinkle and the Rame Peninsula. Some sections are straightforward, while others involve climbs, cliff paths and tide-dependent beach sections. It is worth checking the route before setting off, especially if you are walking with children or dogs.

The Monkey Sanctuary near Looe is a useful family day out close to Downderry, while Looe itself offers boat trips, fishing trips, harbour walks and local food. The Rame Peninsula, Mount Edgcumbe and Whitsand Bay are also within reach for longer days out. Downderry is best for visitors who want a quieter south-east Cornwall base with walking, beaches and small coastal villages nearby.
