The closest larger town is Newquay where you can head for more restaurants, shops, surf schools, nightlife and family attractions. It has several beaches of its own, including Fistral, Towan, Great Western and Porth, so it adds plenty of choice without taking you far from Watergate Bay. It is also handy for transport links, including Newquay Airport and the railway station.

Mawgan Porth sits just up the coast and gives you a smaller beach village setting, with cafés, a sandy bay and access to the coast path. Porth is closer to Newquay and works well for a quieter beach stop between the town and Watergate Bay. Further north, Padstow gives you a harbour town day out with restaurants, shops, ferry access to Rock and the Camel Estuary.

Beaches around Watergate Bay

Watergate Bay Beach is the main reason to stay here. At low tide, it opens into a long stretch of sand, giving plenty of space for walking, surfing, bodyboarding and beach games. The beach is exposed to the Atlantic, so tide times, surf conditions and lifeguard information are worth checking before swimming or going in with children.

Porth Beach is nearby and has a more sheltered feel than Watergate Bay, especially for families wanting easier beach time close to Newquay. Mawgan Porth Beach offers another sandy bay to the north, with cliffs, rock pools and village facilities close by. Fistral Beach in Newquay is the better-known surf beach, while Crantock and Holywell Bay give you larger sandy options further down the coast.

Surf, walks and things to do

Surfing is one of the biggest draws at Watergate Bay, with lessons and hire available in season. The beach is also popular for long walks, beach sports and relaxed days where you do not need much more than the tide to be right. Several places to eat sit close to the sand, which makes it easy to stay around the bay for the whole day.

The South West Coast Path runs through Watergate Bay, with routes towards Mawgan Porth in one direction and Porth and Newquay in the other. The walk north gives you cliffs, open sea views and a quieter stretch of coast, while the route south links you with more beaches and town facilities. For days away from the sand, Newquay, Padstow, Bedruthan Steps, Mawgan Porth and the wider north Cornwall coast are all easy options.
