Just along the coast is Paignton gives you a more traditional seaside setting, with a sandy beach, pier, promenade and family attractions. It is useful for an easy day out from Torquay, especially if you want a more relaxed resort feel without travelling far. Goodrington and Preston also sit nearby, adding more beach options along this part of Torbay.

Brixham lies further around the bay and has a very different character, with a working fishing harbour, marina and seafood places close to the water. Inland, Cockington offers thatched cottages, parkland, tearooms and craft studios, making it a good change from the seafront. Dartmouth is also within reach for a longer day out, with river views, ferries, shops and harbour walks.

Nearby beaches

Torre Abbey Sands is the main beach close to Torquay’s seafront and town centre. It is one of the easiest beaches to use if you want sand, facilities, cafés and the promenade close by. Corbyn Beach sits nearby and gives another simple seafront option within the main bay.

Meadfoot Beach has a quieter feel and is better suited to visitors who want views, swimming, paddling and a slightly less central setting. Oddicombe Beach sits below Babbacombe and can be reached from the clifftop area, giving a different beach experience on the other side of town. Anstey’s Cove, Maidencombe and Watcombe are smaller coastal spots nearby, better for short visits, views and quieter time by the water.

Points of interest and things to do

Torquay’s harbour and marina are central to the town, with boat trips, restaurants by the sea, bars and waterfront walks all close together. The seafront gardens, Princess Theatre and Torre Abbey area give you plenty to do without needing to leave town. This makes Torquay useful for mixed-weather stays, especially if you want more options than a small beach village can offer.

Babbacombe is one of the most worthwhile local areas to explore, with clifftop views, the model village, independent places to eat and access down towards Oddicombe Beach. Kents Cavern adds a different kind of day out, with prehistoric caves just outside the town centre. For longer trips, Paignton, Brixham, Cockington and Dartmouth all give you easy ways to vary the holiday without moving far from Torquay.
