Just inland from Torcross is Slapton which gives you a quieter village setting with pubs, local history and access to the nature reserve. It pairs naturally with Torcross because the two places sit either side of Slapton Ley, with the beach and freshwater lake between them. Strete is another nearby village, set above the coast with views across Start Bay and access to smaller beaches.

Dartmouth is the nearest larger town for shops, restaurants, harbour walks, boat trips and river views. Kingsbridge is also within reach and is useful for supermarkets, cafés, local services and estuary walks. Further south, Beesands and Hallsands offer smaller coastal stops, while Salcombe gives you a busier harbour-town day out if you want more places to eat and shop.

Nearby beaches

Slapton Sands is the main beach at Torcross, despite the name being slightly misleading because it is mostly shingle rather than sand. It stretches for several miles along Start Bay, giving you a long shoreline for walking, sea views and time by the water. The beach is exposed in places, so swimming conditions should be checked carefully before going in.

Beesands is close by and offers another shingle beach with a smaller village feel. Blackpool Sands, further towards Dartmouth, is one of the area’s more sheltered beach options and is better suited to a classic beach day with facilities close by. Strete Gate sits at the northern end of Slapton Sands and gives access to the same long stretch of coast from a quieter point.

Points of interest and things to do

Slapton Ley is one of the main features of the area and sits directly behind the beach. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in South West England and is known for wildlife, birdwatching and walking routes. The contrast between the shingle beach and the freshwater reserve is what makes Torcross different from many other South Devon coastal villages.

Torcross is also linked with the Second World War through Exercise Tiger, the D-Day rehearsal that took place in Start Bay. The Sherman tank memorial on the seafront is a clear reminder of that history. For days out, Dartmouth, Start Point Lighthouse, Beesands, Hallsands and the coast path around Start Bay give you a useful mix of walking, history, harbour visits and quieter coastal stops.
