Padstow is the closest larger town and the place most visitors use for harbour walks, restaurants, shops and ferry access across the Camel Estuary. It is busier than St Merryn, particularly in summer, but useful to have nearby when you want more choice for food or a day away from the beach. Trevone sits closer to the coast and gives you a smaller village setting with its own beach.

Mawgan Porth and Porthcothan are further down the coast towards Newquay, each offering a quieter beach village feel. Newquay is within reach for surf schools, larger shops, family attractions and a livelier town centre. St Merryn itself works as the inland hub, giving you local facilities without tying you to one beach.

The “Seven Bays” are the main reason people choose St Merryn. They are usually listed as Trevone, Harlyn, Mother Ivey’s, Booby’s, Constantine, Treyarnon and Porthcothan, some of the best beaches in North Cornwall. Each has a different feel, so you can pick the beach around the day rather than settling for one stretch of sand all week.

Harlyn Bay Beach is one of the most practical family options, with a broad sandy beach and easier access than some of the smaller coves. Constantine Beach and Booby’s Bay feel more open and are popular with surfers when conditions are right. Treyarnon has rock pools and a smaller bay setting, while Porthcothan offers a wider beach backed by cliffs and dunes. Trevone is useful if you want a village beach with facilities close by.

Points of interest and things to do

St Merryn is a good base for simple beach-hopping, but there is more nearby than sand. The South West Coast Path links the bays and gives you clear walking routes along this part of the north Cornwall coast. Some sections are easy to dip into for short walks, while others are better suited to longer days with proper footwear.

Padstow adds boat trips, cycling on the Camel Trail, harbour time and plenty of places to eat. Trevose Head is worth visiting for views, coastal walking and the lighthouse, while the wider area gives you access to golf, water-sports and surf lessons.
