Porthtowan is close by and offers a more surf-focused beach setting, with cliffs, cafés and coast path routes towards Chapel Porth and St Agnes. St Agnes itself gives you a larger village base, with independent shops, pubs, places to eat and access to Trevaunance Cove. Both are good options if you want a change from Portreath without travelling far.

Redruth and Camborne are the nearest larger towns for supermarkets, transport links and practical services. Truro is within reach for a wider choice of shops, restaurants and rainy-day plans, while Hayle, Gwithian and Godrevy open up the coast around St Ives Bay. Tehidy is also close by and handy for woodland walks away from the seafront.

Portreath Beach is the main beach in the village, set beside the harbour and backed by cliffs. It has sand at lower tide, rock pools and easy access to local places to eat, making it a simple option for families and anyone staying nearby. The harbour wall and surrounding cliffs give the beach a more enclosed feel than the wider beaches further along the coast.

Porthtowan Beach is nearby if you want a broader surf beach with a more open north coast feel. Gwithian and Godrevy are also within reach and give you longer sands, surf, dunes and views across St Ives Bay. Chapel Porth is another good option for a smaller cove setting, with mining heritage and coast path walks close by.

Points of interest and things to do

Portreath has strong links to Cornwall’s mining and industrial past, and the harbour was once used for exporting copper ore from the surrounding mining areas. That history is still part of the village’s character, especially around the harbour and the old mineral tramway routes. The coast path also makes it easy to see the wider mining landscape along this part of Cornwall.

The South West Coast Path gives you walking routes towards Porthtowan in one direction and Godrevy in the other. Tehidy Country Park is close by for woodland trails, cycling and family walks when you want a break from the beach. For fuller days out, St Agnes, Truro, Hayle, Gwithian and Godrevy all add variety without pulling you too far from Portreath.
