The Isle of Wight has a mix of beaches that allow dogs year-round and others with seasonal restrictions. Compton Bay is one of the most reliable options, offering a long, open stretch where dogs are welcome throughout the year. Yaverland Beach, just beyond Sandown, is another good choice with fewer restrictions than the main resort beaches.

In contrast, central areas of Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde beaches have restrictions between May and September, usually during daytime hours. However, quieter sections or nearby alternatives are often available, and early morning or evening access can be more flexible. Coastal paths and walking routes

The Isle of Wight Coastal Path circles the island and provides one of the best ways to explore with a dog. It links key areas such as Compton Bay, The Needles, Ventnor and Sandown, with a mix of cliff-top paths and access points down to the beach.

Some sections, particularly on the west coast and around the downs, are more exposed and uneven, so route choice is important. Other areas, especially near the east coast towns, offer flatter and more accessible walking.

Choosing the right base for a dog friendly stay

Location makes a difference when travelling with a dog. Staying near Compton or the west coast gives you access to more open, less restricted beaches. The Sandown and Shanklin area works well if you stay near the edges, where access is more flexible. Ventnor offers a quieter base with coastal paths close by.

Being slightly outside the busiest areas makes it easier to avoid restrictions and reach open space quickly, especially during peak season.
