The popular surfing town of Newquay is close by, but far enough away for Crantock to feel like a separate base. It gives you a wider choice of restaurants, shops, surf schools, nightlife and family attractions, including the zoo and aquarium. This is useful if you want a quiet village cottage but still want busier days or evenings within a short trip.

Holywell Bay is another nearby coastal village, with a larger open beach and a more rural feel around the dunes. Cubert sits inland and is useful for local pubs and village facilities, while Perranporth is within reach for a livelier beach town with cafés, surf, shops and a long sandy beach. St Agnes is also nearby for a smaller coastal village feel and access to walks around the north Cornwall coast.

Nearby beaches

Crantock Beach is the main beach, with a wide sandy bay backed by dunes and the Gannel Estuary on one side. It is popular for beach days, surfing, bodyboarding and walking, with plenty of space at lower tide. The estuary is tidal, so crossing points and routes can change through the day.

Fistral Beach is nearby in Newquay and is the better-known surf beach, with surf schools, events and more facilities close to the sand. Holywell Bay offers another large sandy beach, backed by dunes and known for its distinctive offshore rocks. Perranporth is further down the coast and gives you a long beach with more of a town setting, while Polly Joke is a quieter cove for walkers who want something less developed.

Points of interest and things to do

The Gannel Estuary is one of Crantock’s key features and gives the village a different feel from Newquay’s main beaches. At low tide, it opens up sandy walking routes, while at higher tide it becomes a sheltered waterway used for kayaking and paddle-boarding when conditions suit. Tide times matter here, especially if you are planning to cross or walk close to the estuary.

The South West Coast Path gives you routes towards Newquay, Pentire Headland, Holywell Bay and Porth Joke. These walks are a good way to link several beaches without driving between them. Newquay adds surf lessons, boat trips, family attractions and more places to eat, while the quieter coast south of Crantock gives you dunes, coves and headland walks within easy reach.
