Thorpeness is a curious and colourful little resort on the Suffolk coast. Once a working fishing village and smuggler’s haunt, Thorpeness was transformed in the early 1900’s into an eccentric holiday village by a flamboyant and rich Scotsman. Amongst the many attractions he built was an artificial lake with boats, a windmill, a water tower plus an impressive array of sports facilities including tennis courts and a golf course. All of these installations still remain and make for entertaining holiday attractions for kids and grown-ups. The best attraction of course is the stunning stretch of shingle beach which offers peaceful far reaching views and a place where children can play amongst the pebbles whilst others relax on a deck chair or participate in one of the many water sports on offer.

There is also a famous regatta in August which is accompanied by the carnival in the neighbouring town of Aldeburgh which culminates in a fabulous firework finale. South of the village lies the North Warren RSPB reserve, which offers wonderful wildlife trails for all ages and of course there is a host of cafes, pubs and shops to explore. The self-catering Thorpeness cottages to rent listed here are child friendly, some are pet friendly and there are even a few suitable for group accommodation sleeping 8 or more people. Book your cottage direct with the property manager or owner, ensuring you receive the most competitive rates including any offers or late deals that may be available.
