The town is compact, but its steep streets mean location can make a difference depending on how close you want to be to the harbour or beach.

Across the water, Polruan offers a quieter village setting with strong views back towards Fowey. Bodinnick sits further up the river and is linked by car ferry, making it useful for exploring the eastern side of the estuary. Nearby places such as Golant, Lerryn, Par and Polkerris give you other options, from riverside stays to more traditional beach locations within easy reach of Fowey.

Beaches and water access

Readymoney Cove is the best-known beach close to Fowey, sitting just south of the town near the mouth of the estuary. It is a small, sheltered sandy cove backed by cliffs, with views across the water towards Polruan. Its position makes it a practical beach choice if you are staying in Fowey and want somewhere you can reach without driving.

Fowey is not a long, open-beach resort in the same way as some other Cornish towns. The appeal here is more about the mix of harbour, estuary, coves and coastal paths. For wider sands, nearby places such as Par and Polkerris offer different beach settings while still keeping Fowey within reach for meals, harbour walks and day trips.

What to see and do nearby

The harbour is central to Fowey’s character, with boats, ferries and waterfront buildings shaping much of the town. South of the centre, St Catherine’s Castle sits above Readymoney Cove and adds a clear landmark to the coastal approach. The town is also closely linked with Daphne du Maurier, which gives Fowey a literary connection as well as its sailing and harbour appeal.

One of the main walking routes is the Hall Walk, which links Fowey, Bodinnick and Polruan using the river crossings. The route follows the estuary and creeks, with views back across the harbour and out towards the coast. This makes Fowey a strong base if you want a beach cottage stay with great sea view walks, river views and exploring by ferry, rather than relying only on beach days.
