Coastal towns, villages and where to stay

Hampshire works well if you want a coastal break with plenty of choice in a smaller area. Southsea and Portsmouth offer the busiest seafront setting, with beaches, attractions, restaurants, museums and ferry links close together. Hayling Island gives you a more traditional beach base, with long seafront areas, water-sports and easy access to both Langstone Harbour and Chichester Harbour.

Further west, the coast changes around the New Forest and the Solent. Lymington is a good base for sailing, marinas, shops and ferry access to the Isle of Wight, while Milford on Sea offers a village setting close to the beach and views towards The Needles. Calshot and Lepe are more open and less resort-like, with coastal paths, country park space and views across Southampton Water and the Solent.

Beaches, harbours and the Solent setting

Hampshire’s beaches are generally more mixed than the large sandy beaches found in some other counties. Many are shingle or have shingle at the top of the beach, with sand appearing in places at lower tide. This makes the coast well suited to walking, sailing, paddling, water-sports and sea views, rather than only traditional bucket-and-spade beach days.

Hayling Island is one of the main beach areas in the county, with several miles of seafront and a choice of beach sections. Southsea and Eastney provide easy beach access close to Portsmouth, while Lee-on-the-Solent and Stokes Bay offer wide views across the water. On the New Forest side, Milford on Sea, Calshot and Lepe give you a quieter coastal setting, with beaches, nature areas and walking routes close by.

Days out, walks and nearby places

One of Hampshire’s strengths is how easily the coast connects with other places to visit. From Portsmouth and Southsea, you have access to historic dockyard attractions, the Spinnaker Tower, ferry routes and a lively seafront. Lymington adds a different kind of coastal stay, with marinas, market streets and regular ferry links across to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight.

The New Forest coast gives Hampshire another layer, especially around Keyhaven, Milford on Sea, Calshot and Lepe. These areas are useful for walking, birdwatching, cycling and quieter days away from the busier seafronts. This makes Hampshire a practical choice for beach cottage stays where you want coast, countryside, harbours and days out all within easy reach.
