Charlestown is the nearest coastal village and one of the area’s main draws, with a historic harbour, tall ships, stone quays, cafés and a shingle beach. Mevagissey gives you a busier fishing village setting, with narrow streets, harbour views and plenty of places to eat. Pentewan, Duporth and Porthpean add smaller coastal options nearby, while Fowey is close enough for a day out with ferries, shops and estuary views.

Beaches close to town

Carlyon Bay is one of the main beach areas near St Austell, with a long stretch of sand and shingle across St Austell Bay. It is close to Charlestown and works well for beach walks, sea views and summer events. Porthpean is another good option, with a sheltered beach that is popular for swimming, kayaking and family beach days when conditions are suitable.

Pentewan Beach is useful if you want a broader sandy beach with more space and easier access to the coast path towards Mevagissey.
